If you are thinking of stepping up a size:

I bought a NH TC33D last year for $17,500. This included R4 tires (filled with CaCl), engine block heater, Woods 1012 loader with HD 66" bucket (was about the same price as the NH 7308 FEL). This did not include any mower (bought a brush mower later). I've got 200 hours on it now, and am very pleased with it. You could probably save a bit over what I paid, since they have some special incentives out now (if they haven't ended).

The other option in the NH line is the TC29D, same as the TC33D, a few less Hp for a few hundred less $$

I bought a Woods GB72 (6 foot box blade, fixed tailgate) for just under $600. The HB84 is similar construction, but heavier duty, and has a hinged tailgate. It's a good SOLID unit, though I would think it is too large for a TC33... I guess it depends on what you are doing with it.

I have a Woods 1012 loader on my TC33D. It's a good combination. Several hundred pounds more lift capacity, and has larger dump and rollback angles than the NH 7308 loader. Can tell you the price, since it was part of the package I bought, but it must be pretty close to the NH 7308 price, since it did not affect my total for the package.

You have a couple of options if you are considering one of the New Holland TC's that use the 7308 FEL (TC25/29/33):

Go with a Woods 1012 FEL. 1200 lift, larger dump and rollback angles than the 7308.

Wait for NH's new loaders to become available. I believe the model number is 14LA. It's similar to the loader design on the TC35/40/45. I haven't seen the specs yet, but I assume they are addressing the lift capacity issue, since that was the biggest beef most people had with the 7308

If you are going to load your tires, ask for Rim Guard. It weghs just as much as the CaCl solutions, is non-corrosive (actually helps prevent corrosion), and non-toxic.

I think you'll find that the seat which comes with your 40D is night and day difference from what you are used to on your old 3000.

I've got a Woods 6 ft Box Blade on my TC33D (w/CaCl filled R4 tires). I'm happy with the match up. I occasionally run into traction problems when in poor soil conditions, but taking a slightly smaller bite gets me through. I would NOT want to go down to a 5 ft model. As someone else mentioned, the 6 footer makes for a good couple of passes on my gravel driveway. I don't think I would even notice the few HP difference when using a box blade on a TC29 vs a TC33. HP has not been a limiting factor for me.

If traction is a major concern, you may want to look at some ballast on the rear wheels (weights or liquid fill). Remember, once the box is in the ground, it ceases to be ballast.

I use a 4" (4.5" ??) angle grinder on my brush mower and do it right on the mower. The grinder was a cheapie, $25 or so. Works great... the only problem I have is figuring out how to direct the grinding sparks so I don't fry myself (heavy gloves and an old Carhart jacket help). I can usually figure out something with pieces of old 2x4 to keep the blades from pivoting while I try to grind them.

I do NOT use a fine grit wheel, since this tends to generate more heat. Take it slow, let things cool as you go.

I try to take off the same amount of each blade to maintain balance, but after a couple of resharpenings I usually pull the blades off and grind to match the weight and balance point of the blades.

I have a Woods BB60 on my NH TC33D (about the same as a JD 4300). It handles 1" saplings on a regular basis, and I have occasionally done some 2". I find that this "standard duty" Woods mower is the equivalent of the medium duty mowers sold by some other companies. I looked at the BB600, but decided it was overkill for my needs... that thing is built like a TANK!! It will definitely handle your 2" saplings, no problem.

You may want to be looking at the 6 ft models, however (BB720), since I don't think a 5 footer will cover your tracks in a JD 4700 (hard to mow up close to a fence line, for example). You'll definitely need some front ballast or a FEL to keep good traction on your front wheels. If you won't be doing a LOT of 2" material, you could get by with the BB72 (rated for 30 - 65 HP) instead of the BB720.

Tisco makes one that extends from 20" to 28". I have it on my TC33D. It was the closest fit (their next size smaler was too short, and also had too short a range of motion). After trying it out, I ended up shortening it by a couple of inches by cutting off most of a spacer that is welded to the fixed end of the cylinder. Unfortunately, I do not have the part number, but I got it from my NH dealer. If you can't find one, let me know and I'll try to get the part number for you.

Gearmore also makes good cylinders (some say better quality than Tisco). Worth looking at as well.

My 2 cents worth on the subject:

On flat ground, or very modest slopes, more weight = more stable. So more weight will help prevent the START of a rollover.

On a steeper slope, or once you have started to roll over, Once the center of gravity crosses over the pivot point (usually your downhill rear tire), it's all over... you are going to roll. The higher your C of G, the more quickly you reach this point. (draw yourself a rediculosly exaggerated picture of a tractor with an extremely high COG as compared to it's width... you'll see it only takes a few degrees to hit the point of no return). Setting your wheels on their widest possible setting moves the pivot point outward, delaying the point at which your COG crosses over the pivot point.

So my thought is: higher initial stability: more weight = better. Higher ultimate stability: lower COG = better.

Chim - I don't think an 80% filled tire will act just like an air filled one as far as compression goes. If you imagine hitting something that compresses your tire 10% (an exaggerated example, I know): In an ir filled tire, the air pressure goes up 10% (compressed to 90% of original volume). In an 80% liquid filled tire, if you deform/compress the tire 10%, you have cut the 20% air volume in half, and doubled the air pressure. In practice, you probably wouldn't compress it this far, youd just get a bumpier ride.

BTW... don't let the fact that the 25D has been discontinued scare you off, if you can get an acceptable price. A TC 25D is basically just a TC 29D with the RPMs turned down to 2600 (29D is the same engine, but rated at 2800). Parts will not be an issue as long as you can get them for the 29D.

With a little more info, we might be able to help you narrow your search a bit. What kind of work will you be doing with the tractor?

If you are mowing a large part of the 12 acres, we can probably rule out the sub-compacts and maybe the smaller end of the compact range. Most people will not want to spend the kind of time it would take to mow that much with a smaller tractor. Does your mowing need to be "finish quality" or would a brush hog (rougher cut) do for your needs. Is your garden likely to be closer to a 10 ft x 10 ft plot (use a shovel or a walk behind roto-tiller) or a larger undertaking? Do you intend to do a fair amount of regrading of the land, or mostly leaving the general layout/slope as-is?

The more you can tell us, both about the current state of your land (hilly/smooth, rocky/sandy/clay, wooded/overgrown pasture, etc.) the more we can help.

Perhaps this "explosion risk" the tire shop mentioned was just their assumption of why the insurance company had a fit. Maybe the real concern was the toxicity of methanol and the fact that it can be absorbed through the skin?

For whoever asked: Rim Guard is made from sugar beets (mostly) and still flows at -40 F. There are a few other additives to improve various properties (including corrosion resistance).

I actually ended up paying 17,700 for a TC33D with a Woods 1012 loader (I wanted the heavier capacity and better rollback and dump angles on the Woods unit). But before I actually made that decision, I was able to get the dealer down to $17,500 for the tractor and a 7308 loader w/HD bucket, filled R4's and block heater. The dealer was Champlain Valley Equipment in Middlebury, VT (802-388-4967). I dealt with Derek, who was very knowledgable and quite helpful. Champlain Valley Equip. also has a good reputation for service.

The cheapest deal I found was from Bechard's in NY, but they were too far away for my liking, and don't have the service reputation that C. V. has.

The Lift Capacity specs for the JD 420 and 430 loaders( 1195# & 1258#) are given at the pivot pin, at least in the brochure I have. I BELIEVE the NH 7308 loader spec of 800# is at 24" this would explain most, if not all of the discrepancy in capacity. (not sure about this, you may want to verify w/NH)

Frank- If the 4 foot weeds were in a field that you could have mowed with your lawn tractor (before they got so tall), then you should be able to handle it with a MMM on any of the compacts you are considering. If the field is smooth and obstacle-free enough to mow with a finish mower, and that is what you'd like to use in the long run, then that is what I'd get. You don't need a brush hog for a one-time deal. Just takes small bites, mow as high as you can the first time, and go slow. Then go back in a couple days and mow it down lower (preferrably in a different pattern from how you mowed the first time). It will probably be a bit messy from the chopped up weeds, but if you are not looking for a finished lawn right away, it will get better with time and further mowing.

If it's a rough field with lots of hidden rocks or stumps, then that's where a rotary mower (brush hog) shines. This is what I use for almost all of my mowing, but then I don't mond my field being a bit "rough around the edges". I'm not into golf course type lawns.

I've got a 5ft Woods BB60 on a NH TC33D (27 PTO HP). This is Woods lighter duty model, but it's built as heavy as some other manufacturer's medium duty. I've had no troubles mowing the type of stuff you describe. IMO, the next step up in the Woods line, the "medium duty" BB600 (or BB720 for the 6 ft model) is way overkill for what you want to do.

I'm not familiar with the MF 230. Unless it's very heavy in the front end, I would look at some suitcase weights for the front end, unless you get a really light weight cutter. If you've got a FEL mounted, you should be fine with no additional weight. For me the problem wasn't so much the front end lifting off the ground, it was more of a loss of steering traction. I'd turn the wheel, and keep going straight.
